STEPS TO BECOMING AN EFFECTIVE ADVOCATE

AT THE STATE AND LOCAL LEVEL

1 Believe in the power of individual effort!

2 Sign up to receive messages from the CANEC listserv by clicking “Register to Participate” at www.canec.org. Then read your e-mail regularly to receive updates on pending legislation important to the charter community.

3 Get to know and communicate regularly with people active in charter schools

v Teachers

v Administrators

v Parents

v Students

v CANEC Members, Directors and Staff

4 Become an active participant at your charter school site

v Volunteer in and for the school

v Attend meetings

v Serve on governance board, advisory committee or PTA

5 Become active with you local CANEC region

v Get to know your Regional Coordinator

v Attend regional meetings

v Volunteer to participate with phone or e-mail trees

6 Get to know your elected legislators.

7 Become familiar with the members of the Senate and Assembly Education Committees.

8 Maintain informed contact with your legislators.

9 Encourage other community members to become involved.
