Information and Resources regarding the newly formed
California Charter Schools Association

Over the summer, some very exciting work has been accomplished towards the creation of a new, powerful organization capable of taking the California charter school movement to the next level. In the interest of keeping the CANEC membership fully informed about the progress and process, we have put together the following resources. The information below presents the complete picture of past events and future milestones that need to be met to complete the process.

Where we are now is the result of over a year of work beginning with the original concept to reinvent CANEC into a more powerful organization. Much of the work to reinvent CANEC and form the new California Charter Schools Association has happened concurrently and in a complimentary fashion.

In September, CANEC members in good standing (current paid members) will have the opportunity to vote to approve or reject the proposed merger into the new California Charter Schools Association. Members eligible to vote include those within the following CANEC membership categories: Charter School Members, Development Group Members, Education Organization Members, Employee Members, and Parent Members.

The concept for creating this website was born from the June 24 CANEC Member Council meeting where Member Council representatives, on behalf of the membership, requested additional resources on the process of developing this new organization.

March 2003 Letter of Intent for CANEC / CSDC merger into NewCo

CANEC's Original Reinvention Documents

March 2003
A non-binding Letter of Intent to merge CANEC and CSDC was approved by the CANEC Board of Directors as well as the Charter Schools Development Center (CSDC) to explore the merger of CANEC and CSDC into a new organization. The name "NewCo" became a placeholder name for the new organization.

June 2003
NewCo incorporated and formed a Board of Directors, comprised of representatives from each organization as well as from the business and philanthropy community. One of the first priorities was to begin the search for a CEO that would provide the necessary leadership to bring together a cohesive and strategically aligned organization capable of supporting and broadening the charter school movement in California.

June 2003
The first meeting of CANEC's Member Council was held. The purpose of the meeting was to define the role of this new council, its responsibilities and goals. It was deemed critical to keep CANEC membership informed regarding the progress toward merging into NewCo.

July 2003
The NewCo Board of Directors hired Caprice Young as the CEO for the new organization. Caprice served for four years on the LAUSD Board where she exhibited strong leadership skills in changing the culture within the school district and demonstrated her commitment to charter schools and choice within public education.

August 2003

The name of the new organization was given: California Charter Schools Association.
