CANEC Member Council Information
and CANEC Restructuring Plan

Dear CANEC Members:

As the charter school movement moves into its second decade, so does CANEC. Looking to the future of the charter school movement, CANEC has spent the past several months restructuring the organization to better serve its members. A major aspect of this restructuring is providing CANEC with a strong, dynamic governance structure combining an influential Board of Directors with a Member Council that will actively engage the membership.

Please find below more information on CANEC's Restructuring Plan as well as a ballot submission form to place your name on the ballot for CANEC's new Member Council.

Sincerely,
Sue Bragato, CANEC Executive Director

MEMBER MEMO

TO: CANEC Members
FROM: Sue Bragato, Executive Director
RE: Member Council Election

As the charter movement moves into its second decade, so does CANEC. Founded in 1993 in the excitement offered by the Charter Schools Act of 1992 and its promise of sweeping educational reform, CANEC has made a singular statewide contribution to the growth of the charter school movement during its first ten years.

Looking to the future of the charter school movement, CANEC has spent the past several months restructuring the organization to better serve its members. A major aspect of this restructuring is providing CANEC with a strong, dynamic governance structure combining an influential Board of Directors with a Member Council that will actively engage the membership.

At this time we invite you to consider running for election to the Member Council, which will be a 17-member body representing CANEC member categories and regions. The Member Council will be compromised of:

* Nine charter school member representatives. (One representative will be elected from each CANEC region. Representatives will be school administrators and/or school governing board members.)

*Two charter school employee members.

* Two charter school parent/student members.

* Two charter school development group members.

* Two "At-Large" members. (The current President and President- elect will serve as the at-large members for the first year.)

The Member Council election will take place in February. Members who submit their name for the ballot WILL BE PLACED ON THE BALLOT. The deadline for submitting your name for the ballot is Friday, January, 24, 2003.

The complete restructuring plan, revised bylaws, and ballot submission form can be found at: www.canec.org/membercouncil.html. If you do not have access to the internet, please contact the CANEC San Carlos office and we will send you the information by mail.

If you have any questions, please donšt hesitate to contact me at 650 654-6003 or by e-mail at Bragato@canec.org.
