Charter Schools Web Site
During a 1996 national meeting in Minnesota on charter schools, sponsored
by the U.S. Department of Education, a recommendation emerged to create
a national web site that would support the sharing of practical information
and innovations among charter school operators (e.g., teachers, parents,
principals, community members, etc.). Based on this recommendation, the
U.S. Department of Education has joined in collaboration with the Policy
Support & Studies Program at WestEd and the California State University
(CSU) Institute for Education Reform, Charter Schools Project, to develop
this national demonstration project.
The
US Charter Schools web site is divided into four major components:
- Starting
and Running Your School
- State & School
Profiles
- Resource
Directory & Links
- Search Other
Charter School Sites

Letter Friends back issues. A recently added new Web section highlights
recent CER Op-Eds, on everything from the NEA and Charter Schools to the
Condition of American Education and the "Don't Worry Be Happy" crowd.

Hudson
Institute's Charter Schools in Action Project Final Report, 1997
Hudson Institute is a private, not-for-profit research organization founded
in 1961 by the late Herman Kahn. Hudson analyzes and makes recommendations
about public policy for business and government executives and for the
public at large. It does not advocate an express ideology or political
position. However, more than thirty years of work on the most important
issues of the day has forged a viewpoint that embodies skepticism about
the conventional wisdom, optimism about solving problems, a commitment
to free institutions and individual responsibility, an appreciation of
the crucial role of technology in achieving progress, and an abiding respect
for the importance of values, culture, and religion in human affairs.

is actively involved with the charter school movement. Foundation funds
assist charter schools in developing strategic business plans, provide
legal counsel when necessary and assist with data collection for school

Little
Hoover Commision Report
In 1996, the Hoover Commission visited 26 charter schools, more than one-fourth
of the operational schools in California. The schools included the first,
the largest and a mix of urban and rural sites. Overall, the Commission
saw evidence of the explosion of energy and the strong community links
that occur when teachers, parents and others are given the opportunity
to implement their own programs and procedures. Central to the process
are committed individuals with leadership ability. And a critical key
to success is their skill at involving all stakeholders -- parents, community
leaders, students, teachers, other employees -- in a shared vision of
what education should look like and accomplish.
