Upcoming Scheduled Meetings of the ACCS 2002 2003
Notes from Prior Meetings of ACCS: September
30, 2002 History of the ACCS At their October 2001 meeting, the State Board of Education established the Advisory Commission on Charter Schools (ACCS). The ACCS will be composed of nine members -- eight who are appointed by the State Board and one designated by the State Superintendent. Within the membership, the State Board must ensure representation by school district superintendents, charter schools, teachers, parents/guardians, members of the governing boards of school districts, and county superintendents of schools. The ACCS was created to advise the State Board on aspects of the Board's duties under The Charter Schools Act of 1992, so that the State Board carries out its proper role of ensuring that charter schools realize higher student achievement within a context of sound educational programs and practices, proper financial management and certain specific requirements of law. Priority areas for consideration by the ACCS will include selective granting of charters by the State Board of Education, recommending appropriate action including, but not limited to, revocation of charters, and recommending appropriate funding for non-classroom charter schools pursuant to state regulations. The ACCS may hold regular meetings as frequently as monthly, based on their workload. These meetings will be open to the public and subject to the requirements of the Bagley-Keene Open Meeting Act. |
